Snug-Fit vs Flame-Resistant Sleepwear
United States CPSC regulations classify children’s sleepwear into two categories. Nuohua produces both:
Snug-fit sleepwear. Garments that fit closely to the body (measurements per 16 CFR 1615.1(o) and 1616.2(m)) are exempt from flame-resistant treatment. This applies to sleepwear in sizes 100-150. Snug-fit pajamas are instead subject to the flammability requirements of 16 CFR Part 1610 for general clothing textiles, where the fabric must classify as Class 1 — confirmed by fabric testing rather than assumed from fabric weight.
Loose-fit sleepwear. Garments that are not snug-fitting remain subject to the 16 CFR 1615 and 1616 char-length limits and do not benefit from the snug-fitting exclusion. For US-bound programmes we recommend snug-fitting styling, which stays on the 16 CFR 1610 route. Loose-fit garments also require special hang-tag labeling per CPSC requirements.
We recommend snug-fit styling for first-time sleepwear brands entering the US market — it avoids the complexity and cost of flame-retardant treatment while remaining fully compliant.
Pajama Safety Features
Pajamas have unique safety requirements that differ from daywear:
Covered zipper. Front-zip sleepers and hoodies must have a fabric guard behind the zipper chain and a chin guard at the top. This prevents skin from catching in the zipper track during wear.
Button attachment. All buttons on pajamas are attached with a minimum of 4 passes of thread through each hole, plus a thread shank of at least 1.5mm. Buttons are tested for secure attachment to 5 lb pull force — exceeding CPSC small parts requirements.
Elastic waistband casing. Pajama pants use a fabric casing stitched with two parallel rows. The elastic is loose inside the casing — if it breaks, it does not trap the child’s arm or leg. Elastic width is 18-22mm, encased in cotton fabric.
Drawstrings. Not used on children’s sleepwear sizes 100-150. Per CPSC guidelines, drawstrings at the hood and neck area are prohibited for children’s upper outerwear. We use elastic waistbands only on pajama pants.
