How to Choose a Kids Clothing Manufacturer: 7 Checks Before You Commit

Sourcing children’s apparel is not the same exercise as sourcing adult basics. Children grow fast, their skin reacts more easily, and regulators in the US, EU and China all hold children’s products to a stricter standard. Before you commit to any factory — including ours — run these seven checks.

1. Ask for supporting test reports and compliance documentation, not just certification logos. For U.S. children’s products, request applicable third-party test reports together with the required CPC documentation.
2. Confirm who performed the testing. We arrange testing through SGS, TÜV SÜD and Intertek, and the laboratory is named on the report so your compliance team can verify it independently.
3. Assess the fabric, not the sample photograph. Ask for composition, GSM and the mill. Two garments can look identical on screen and behave completely differently after twenty wash cycles.
4. Ask what the QC steps actually are. “High quality” is not an answer. A real answer sounds like: fabric intake inspection, in-line checks, metal detection on every piece, final AQL sampling.
5. Test response speed before you place an order. Send one detailed technical question and time the reply. That response time is what you will live with for the next three months.
6. Get minimums confirmed per colourway, not per style. Minimums are driven by dye lots and print setup. One style in three prints is usually three separate minimums, not one.
7. Protect your IP before sharing a tech pack. An NNN agreement — not a standard NDA — is the document that is enforceable in China. Ask for one up front.

Children’s Fabric Guide: What Actually Sits Next to Their Skin

Fabric choice drives comfort, wash performance, compliance and unit cost. Here is how the fibres we work with most actually behave in children’s underwear and sleepwear — including the trade-offs nobody puts in a spec sheet.

One practical caution: the softest fabric is not automatically the right one. Sleepwear sold in the US has to satisfy either snug-fit dimensions or a flame-resistance treatment, and a very light knit will not survive the abrasion a toddler puts on knees and seat. We will tell you when a fabric choice will cost you later in returns.

Kidswear Compliance by Market: What You Need Before You Ship

Children’s products face the strictest rules in apparel, and the requirements differ by destination. Getting this wrong does not merely delay a shipment — it can trigger a recall and delisting.

United States

Children’s products require a Children’s Product Certificate (CPC), supported by third-party testing at a CPSC-accepted laboratory. Sleepwear is a special case: it must either meet the snug-fitting dimensions set out in the flammability standard or be treated for flame resistance. Most of the cotton and viscose sleepwear we produce is engineered to the snug-fit route, because the fit is more comfortable and it avoids chemical treatments entirely.

European Union

REACH restrictions on hazardous substances apply, alongside general product safety obligations. EU buyers increasingly ask for OEKO-TEX Standard 100 documentation — we have that certification in progress and will publish it as soon as it is issued.

China and GB 31701

GB 31701 Class A is the mandatory safety standard for textile products intended for infants and young children in China. It is the strictest baseline we work to, so we apply the same thresholds to export orders rather than running two different specifications.

Inside Our Quality Control: Six Checkpoints and Metal Detection

A defect rate under 0.3% is not achieved by inspecting harder at the end. It comes from catching problems at the stage where they are still cheap to fix.

Two things we do that many factories skip. Metal detection is applied to every piece rather than a sample, because one missed fragment is not an acceptable risk in children’s clothing. And we retain reference samples from every production run, so a reorder six months later can be matched against the original approved garment instead of a photograph.

From Tech Pack to Delivery: What a First Order Actually Looks Like

Most first-time buyers underestimate how much of the calendar is spent before any sewing starts. Here is the realistic sequence, stage by stage.

• Enquiry and quotation — 1 to 2 business days. Send a tech pack, or just reference photographs. We reply with itemised pricing, a capability sheet and an NNN agreement.
• Fabric and trim sourcing — 1 to 2 weeks. Choosing a stock fabric collapses this to almost nothing. A custom-dyed or custom-printed fabric is the longest single variable in the whole process.
• Sampling — around 10 days. A pre-production sample is made from your tech pack, typically US$80 to US$150 per style, credited against your bulk order.
• Sample revision — 1 to 2 weeks. Most brands need one round of fit adjustment. Budget for it now rather than treating it as a surprise later.
• Bulk production — 30 days, plus or minus 5. Counted from approved sample and deposit.
• Inspection and shipping — 1 to 2 weeks, plus transit.

Realistically, a custom first order runs about 10 to 12 weeks from tech pack to your warehouse. Reorders on an approved pattern typically compress to 6 to 8 weeks. If you need to move faster than that, the ready-stock private label route is dispatched fast on selected ready-stock styles, because the fabric and patterns already exist.

What Drives Your Unit Price

We publish no price list, because in custom manufacturing a generic list would mislead you. What we can do is show you exactly which levers move the number, so you can design to a target cost from the start.

• Fabric selection and GSM. The largest single component of cost. A heavier interlock costs more per metre and more to ship.
• Order quantity. Unit cost falls as quantity rises, mainly because fabric is bought in larger lots and machine setup is spread over more pieces.
• Number of colourways. Each colour is a separate dye lot with its own minimum. Three colours of one style is not one third the price of one colour — it is closer to three production runs.
• Print versus yarn-dyed. All-over printing carries lower development cost and allows smaller runs. Yarn-dyed stripes or jacquard waistbands look more premium and cost more to develop.
• Construction details. Flatlock seams, covered elastics, tagless heat-transfer labels and functional openings each add operations and therefore cost.
• Packaging. A folded polybag is close to free. A printed mailer box, tissue paper and hang tag programme is a genuine line item — and often worth it for a brand launch.
