“Should we use modal or cotton?” is the single most common fibre question our development team gets from new kids’ underwear brands. It is also one of the most loaded, because both camps have strong marketing behind them. 1. What These Fibres Actually Are
Cotton is a natural seed fibre; Lenzing™ Modal is a regenerated cellulose fibre made from responsibly sourced wood pulp using a closed-loop process. Both are skin-friendly, but they behave differently in knit form.
Cotton is a natural cellulose fibre harvested from the cotton plant. Its staple length, fineness, and how it is spun (combed vs carded) drive much of its quality. Lenzing™ Modal is a branded modal fibre produced by Lenzing AG from wood pulp; it is a regenerated cellulose fibre, meaning the raw cellulose is dissolved and spun into filament, then cut to staple. It is not a synthetic plastic fibre like polyester — it is plant-derived cellulose, just re-engineered for performance.
Why does the distinction matter for a buyer? Because the fibre sets the ceiling on softness, moisture handling, and pilling. The yarn count and knit structure then decide how much of that ceiling you actually reach. A cheap, coarse cotton and a fine Lenzing™ Modal will feel worlds apart; a premium long-staple cotton and a standard modal will be closer than their price tags suggest.

2. Softness and Hand-Feel
Modal generally feels smoother and silkier out of the package and stays smooth after washing; cotton feels warmer and more “matte,” and its softness depends heavily on staple quality.
Modal’s fibre cross-section is rounder and more uniform than cotton’s, which is why it reads as smooth and slightly cool to the touch. That smooth surface also means less inter-fibre friction against skin — a real plus for kids prone to chafing. Cotton’s softness is genuine but more variable: combed long-staple cotton can rival modal, while carded short-staple cotton can feel rougher and develop surface fuzz.
In our experience, modal wins the “first touch” test in showrooms almost every time, which is why it dominates premium kids’ underwear lines. But cotton is not out of the race — a well-built cotton interlock at the right GSM is perfectly comfortable and carries a familiar, natural story that some parents specifically seek.
3. Moisture Management and Skin Comfort
Modal absorbs more water faster and releases it quicker than cotton, so it tends to feel drier against skin during active play. Cotton holds more moisture and dries slower, which can feel clammy when saturated.
Both fibres are hydrophilic (they absorb water readily — unlike polyester). The difference is in the kinetics. Modal’s finer, more open fibre structure wicks moisture and evaporates it faster, helping the microclimate at the skin stay balanced. Cotton absorbs a large volume but releases it slowly, so a sweat-soaked cotton brief stays damp longer. For an everyday underwear layer worn through a school day, modal’s faster drying is a comfort advantage.
That said, neither fibre should be confused with moisture-wicking performance synthetics; both are about absorption and release, not “moving sweat away.” For kids’ underwear that is the right behaviour — you want the layer to manage moisture gently, not to feel plasticky. Pair either fibre with a small elastane content (our blends use 6.8–8.1% Spandex) for recovery and a body-skimming fit that aids airflow.

4. Pilling, Colour Retention, and Wash Life
Modal pills less because its filaments are long and strong; cotton can surface-fuzz over time depending on yarn. Both hold dye well, with modal giving slightly deeper, more even colour.
Pilling is the bane of children’s basics because kids’ garments are washed often and roughly. Modal’s long, strong filament fibres resist the short-fibre migration that creates pills, so a modal interlock typically stays smooth through dozens of cycles. Cotton’s behaviour depends on spinning: ring-spun combed cotton pills little; open-end carded cotton can fuzz. We always run a pilling assessment on development fabrics before approving a bulk run, and the result feeds our defect root-cause tracking.
Colour retention
Both fibres accept reactive and vat dyes well. Modal’s smoother surface tends to give a slightly deeper, more luminous shade at the same dye recipe, and it holds that shade through wash cycles with good colourfastness. Cotton is perfectly serviceable but can show marginally more shade variation between lots, which is why we manage shade-band consistency in bulk carefully when cotton is in the blend.
5. Skin Safety and Compliance
Both fibres are suitable for direct skin contact. Compliance is set by the finished garment standard (e.g., GB 31701 Class A) and third-party restricted-substance testing — not by the fibre choice alone.
For an item worn against a child’s most sensitive skin, the fibre is only one layer of the safety story. The governing requirement for children’s direct-contact apparel in our market is GB 31701 Class A (China children’s A-class safety standard), which limits harmful substances and sets pH and colourfastness thresholds. Garments can be third-party tested by SGS or CPC to confirm restricted-substance compliance; these are independent test bodies, not certificates we “hold.”
We are careful here: we do not claim certifications we have not earned. OEKO-TEX Standard 100 is currently in progress at our facility, and we will say so plainly rather than imply it is granted. We also avoid unproven claims such as “antibacterial” or “antimicrobial” unless backed by specific test data — those terms are easy to overstate and we will not risk a brand’s compliance on them. What we can stand behind is a clean, documented supply chain and a 6-stage QC process with needle detection that supports a reported <0.3% defect rate.

6. Cost, Sustainability, and Nuohua In-Stock Blends
Modal costs more per kilo than standard cotton, but Nuohua’s two in-stock modal blends remove development and setup fees, narrowing the gap for small brands. Cotton-only or cotton-heavy custom blends go through our custom development line.

Both are double-knit interlocks at around 220 GSM — the stable, opaque, comfortable base we recommend for everyday kids’ underwear. If your brand wants a cotton-only or other cotton-dominant cloth, that is a custom fabric development path rather than an in-stock pick, and it carries its own development timeline.
Sustainability notes (kept honest)
Lenzing™ Modal is produced from wood pulp using a process Lenzing describes as closed-loop with high recovery of the spinning solvent, and the fibre carries Lenzing’s own traceability branding. Cotton’s sustainability depends on how it was grown (water, pesticides) — generic cotton without a specific claim carries no such assurance. We will not assert organic or specific eco-certifications we cannot document, so we present the fibre facts and let the brand choose its story. 7. Yarn Spinning and the Blend Rationale
Fibre choice sets the ceiling, but spinning method (combed vs carded, ring-spun vs open-end) and blend ratio decide how much of that ceiling reaches the garment. Our 49.9/43.3/6.8 modal-cotton blend exists to balance silky hand-feel with a familiar natural story at a manageable cost.
A common mistake is to treat “modal vs cotton” as the whole decision. On the mill floor the fibre is only the raw material; what happens next — how it is spun and in what ratio it is blended — often matters more to the finished brief than the fibre headline.
Combed versus carded
Combed cotton has the short, loose fibres removed during preparation, leaving longer, parallel staples. The result is a stronger, smoother, lower-pilling yarn and a notably cleaner surface against skin. Carded cotton keeps those short fibres; it is cheaper and gives a softer, fuzzier, more “natural” hand, but it pills more readily and can feel rougher. This distinction matters far more for cotton than for modal, because Lenzing™ Modal is already produced as a long, uniform filament with little short-fibre content — so modal starts where good cotton ends.
Why blend modal with cotton at all
Our pure modal base (91.9% Lenzing™ Modal + 8.1% Spandex) delivers maximum silkiness and the lowest pilling, but it is a fully regenerated-cellulose story and carries the higher modal fibre cost. Some brands and some parent-buyers specifically want “cotton” named in the composition. The 49.9% Lenzing™ Modal + 43.3% Cotton + 6.8% Spandex blend answers that: cotton is the second-largest component (a real, labelable presence), while modal still carries most of the softness and the faster moisture handling. The cotton also modestly lowers the fibre cost versus pure modal and strengthens a “natural fibre” narrative without sacrificing the premium hand-feel.
Ring-spun and what it buys you
Spinning method changes the yarn’s twist and uniformity. Ring-spun yarn is drawn and twisted more tightly, producing a finer, stronger, more durable thread with a smoother surface — it is our default for intimate panels where both comfort and wash-life count. Open-end (rotor) spinning is faster and cheaper but yields a bulkier, less uniform yarn that pills sooner. For kids’ underwear we spec ring-spun on the body cloth; the small premium is repaid in fewer returns and a better first-touch impression in the showroom.
8. Which Should You Specify? A Decision Table
Choose modal (or a modal-cotton blend) for silky hand-feel, faster drying, and low pilling; choose cotton for a natural, familiar story at lower fibre cost. Match the fibre to your brand promise, not a generic “best.”
